H. G. Wells is one of the most prolific writers in history, and The War of the Worlds is considered by many to be his greatest work.  He's also thought to be the father of miniature wargaming, and his political views are highly socialist.  It's been said that he left the Fabian Society for not being radical enough, and his politics can be found in one form or another in most of his works.  War of the Worlds has been immortalized in movies and a rather famous radio broadcast that had listeners literally panicking in the streets.
